「色彩を持たない多崎つくると、彼の巡礼の年」メモ（３）

２年前に読んだ『色彩を持たない多崎つくると、彼の巡礼の年』を英訳で読んでみた。

読むと言ってもキンドルのナレーション（Audible）を聴きながら読んだのでいわば＜聴読＞ということになろうか。

２年前のそうだったが、いったい誰がシロをレイプし、絞殺したかということがやはり気になる。もちろん、作者が＜謎解き＞をしないかぎり、それは永遠にわからないことだが、主要な登場人物の中で言えばやはり、アカが一番その役に相応しいように思える。

グループの中で最後にシロを見たのはアカであり、その際に彼女がかつての輝きを失っていたことに失望している。魅力的でなくなったシロについてアカはこう言っている。

"Seeing Shiro like that was very painful. It hurt to see that she no longer had that burnig something she used to have. That what had neen remarkable about her had vanished. That the special something would no longer be able to move me the way it used to."

そして彼女の死を知った後に次のように感じたと述べている。

"Whatever the circumstances might have been, she didn't deserve to die like that. But at the same time I couldn't help but feel that the life had already been sucked out of her, even before she was physically murdered."

ここで思い出すのは緑川が持っていたという＜死のトークン＞のことである。ある種の力の源泉である＜死のトークン＞はそれを手にした者に力と才能をもたらすが、同時にその心を損ない、最後には肉体まで破壊するものらしい。

その＜死のトークン＞をシロが（どこで手に入れたかわからないが）持っており、そしてアオがそれを引き継いだのではないか。

＜死のトークン＞を失ったシロは抜け殻のようになり、それを手に入れたアカは力と才能を開花させていく。抜け殻となったシロを＜始末＞したのはアカ本人か、その手先から分からないが、悪霊によって変容したアカなら躊躇なく実行できただろう。

アカの言葉を信じるならばシロの命はすでに＜sucked out＞しており、彼はただその抜け殻の動きを止めただけかもしれない。スイッチを切るように。

職業としての小説家

村上春樹の『職業としての小説家』を読んだ。

現実の＜職業としての小説家＞の人たちがこの本を読んだら（たぶん読まないと思うが）どう思うのだろうか。

作者の考える＜職業としての小説家＞は、有機農法や無農薬などの農作物を産地直送システムで消費者に届ける農業従事者のイメージが一番近いように思う。

第１０章「誰のために書くか」で作者はこう書いている。

・・言い換えれば僕は、読者とのあいだに太いまっすぐなパイプを繫ぎ、それを通してじかにやりとりをするシステムを、時間をかけて築き上げてきたということになるかもしれません。それはメディアや文芸業界といって「仲介業者」を（それほど）必要としないシステムです。そこでなによりも必要とされるのは言うまでもなく、著者と読者のナチュラルな、自然発生的な「信頼の感覚」です。・・（P２６５）

いわば、オルタナティブな小説家システム。

昭和２０年２月、２０歳の三島は出征のために兵庫で入隊検査を受けるのだが、たまたま母親から移された風邪を新米の軍医が肺浸潤と誤診し即日帰郷となっている。

その部隊はフィリピンへ送られ大多数が死傷し部隊は全滅したという。風邪の件がなければ、三島も戦死していたかもしれない。

この体験が三島に特異な死生観をもたらしたといわれているが、大いにありうることである。

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage

Kindle.comで"Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage"を買った。

村上春樹の『色彩を持たない多崎つくると、彼の巡礼の年』の英訳本である。２年ほど前に原作を読んでいるのだが、これも英文で＜聴読＞してみたくなって買ってみた。

前に読んだ"Norwegian Wood"とは違って、こちらはテキストと一緒にナレーションも購入できた。（ちなみにテキストが１３６０円、オーディオが特価で９９９円だった。リーゾナブルだと思う）

たぶん＜Wispersync for Voice＞という仕組みなのだろうが、キンドルで文字を見ながら同時にナレーションを聴くことができるようになっていた。ナレーションの部分には色がつき、ページも勝手にめくってくれるというスグレモノ。

他の村上春樹の作品を見ると、Audible.comにオーディオがあるのに、Kindleのテキストに対応していないもの（前の"Norwegian Wood"などもそうだ）があるのが残念だ。将来的にはすべてが対応されるのを願う。

Norwegian Wood

村上春樹の『ノルウェイの森』の英訳版"Norwegian Wood" を＜聴読＞した。

原作はずい分前に読んでいたが、今回はAudibleで英訳版を聴いてみようと思い、Audible.com（日本語版でない）に会員登録して（正確にいうとAmazon.comに会員登録すると自動的にAudible.comにも登録されるようだ）そのオーディオ版を手に入れた。（お試し期間があるので無料）

オーディオだけではさすがに読解の精度が落ちるだろうと思ったので、Kindle.comでテキストも購入した。（こちらは有料）

まず気づいたのは、テキストとオーディオの内容が少し違っていることだ。イギリス英語をアメリカ英語に置き換えている。例えば、＜underground＞が＜subway＞に代わっているとか。それ以外の理由でも変更されている部分がかなりあった。

オーディオを聞いてとりわけ感銘を受けたのは、文字だけでは理解できない微妙な＜feelings＞を音声を通して感じることができたこと。いわば＜読み聞かせ＞を聴いてような感じ。

個々の言葉の意味が多少分からなくても、語りの流れに身を任せていると自然、物語の言葉に頭脳が慣れ親しんでくる。そして心がそのリズムに同期していく。まるでジョギングをしているように気分。

日本語で読んだ時はずいぶん翻訳調だなと思ったが、実際の翻訳をみるとやはり原作は日本語世界の作品だということがよく分かった。原文と翻訳ではその下地になる世界観がずいぶんと違う。言うまでもなく、言葉とは世界である。

たとえば、直子がワタナベのことをレイコに語る次の場面。

 「私はただもう誰にも私の中に入ってほしくないだけなの。もう誰にも乱されたくないだけなの」

英文ではこうなっている。

"I just don't want anybody going inside me again. I just don't want to be violated like that again --by anybody."

かなり両者のニュアンスが異なるのではないか。＜乱される＞と＜violated＞、意味の重なる部分もあるのだろうが、明らかに＜violated＞の方が暴力的・侵犯的なイメージが強い。セックスというものをどう捉えるかという根深い世界観の違いを感じさせる。ワタナベの行為が直子にどういうインパクトを与えたかという重要な箇所だけに興味深い相違である。


さて、この作品、日本語と英語のどちらが好きかと聞かれたらどうだろうか？

もちろん、日本語と言いたいところだが、今の私の脳に響いている声は、英語のそれである。

木村荘八は、(旧制)中学時代に学校には行かずに芝居と放蕩の生活を送ったそうだ。中学在学中に病欠して遊惰の道に踏み出した永井荷風と似てなくもないが、荘八の方が徹底して遊んだ気配がある。

また二人の大きな違いは、荷風が一匹狼的な行き方を選んだの対して、荘八は美術の仲間を持ったことであろう。その差が晩年の境遇の差となったように思える。

日乗がこの世の証（あかし）荷風の忌　

4月30日
大正６年から亡くなる前日の昭和３４年４月２９日まで、荷風は日乗（日録）を書き続けた。日乗こそが彼がこの世に生きた証だったのかもしれない。

冥土の道

春興やそれが冥土の道ですよ

納骨

母の骨納むる墓のまはりには彼女の遺伝子持つ者集ふ

墓石の中で三十余年待つ父の骨なほ土に還らず

われもまた此処にて土に還らんか二人より得し命のゆゑに

彼岸の前に宇治の山にて母の納骨を済ませり。時ならぬ時雨の降る中、血族姻族そろひて最後の見送りをす。墓石の中に空室ありてその底は土なり。骨は晒の布袋に入れてそこに納む。年月を経てその骨は袋とともに土に還るといふ。この地の風なりや。
